Meet Abimaro! A former Spitalfields Music Trainee Music Leader, who’s working with the Osmani Primary School for our Takeover Spring Festival.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Abimaro and I’m a singer songwriter, so I love working on a project like this where I get to hear all sorts of wonderful ideas and stories!
What are you most looking forward to about your school’s Takeover festival day?
I am really looking forward to making a whole new environment for people to step into on the day of the festival, and using unusual places to create music in.
How did you come to start making music?
I grew up in a family where we sang all the time, nobody really played any other instruments, but my mother would sing to us all the time, to wake me up, when she was cooking etc., so that’s when I started singing.
What/who is your biggest inspiration and why?
I am hugely inspired by Joni Mitchell. I first heard her music when I was 18. From then on I have been inspired and challenged by her music.
When you’re not making music what do you get up to?
I love having friends around and cooking, and going to church, and spending time with my family.
What projects have you been working on recently?
I have nearly finished recording a new collection of songs with my band Abimaro & The Free, and that has been a long time coming so I have been so excited about finishing it.
